The Ride

The Headless Horseman called in sick. Well, not sick—busy. Mass catastrophe topside, all hands on deck, even the legends got pulled for emergency duty.

Which left exactly one skeleton in the office when someone remembered: it's October 31st. Someone has to ride.

Me. The bookkeeper.

"But I have my head—"

"Doesn't matter."

"No one's going to believe—"

"NO ONE CARES."

They shoved a pumpkin in my hands.

"Wait, this isn't even carved—"

"NO TIME. RIDE."

Before I could argue, I was on the horse—a massive skeletal beast already moving—cape billowing behind me (where did that come from?), and oh god we're going so fast and I don't know the route and how do you even steer—

I nearly fell off twice in the first minute.

The second time I lurched sideways, one thought screamed through my skull: Oh my god I'm going to die—

Wait.

The horse shifted beneath me. Caught me. Steadied me.

Oh.

He knew this. He'd done this a hundred times. I just had to hold on and trust him.

I could manage that…I hoped.

We thundered through the woods. Branches whipped past. The moon blazed overhead. The autumn wind roared through my bones and—wait. Was I... enjoying this? The terror was still there, sharp and electric, but underneath it something else thrummed: exhilaration. This was terrifying, yes, but it was also kind of... fun?
My grip on the reins relaxed.

And then—a village. Windows glowing. People looking up as we passed, eyes wide, pointing—

They saw me. Not the bookkeeper. Not the guy who files expense reports. The Horseman.

I raised the pumpkin higher. The horse surged forward like I'd finally understood the assignment.

The autumn wind roared past my bones. The moon blazed overhead. And I felt it—the power, the wildness, the absolute muchness of this moment.

When we circled back to the stables, I didn't head to my desk.
I went straight to HR to ask about next year's tryouts.

All of us were meant for more than small spaces and safe choices. Tonight, I found my wildness—and I'm not giving it back.
